Jingles is a Bucket Filler!

Jingles filled all the student's buckets last night!  What a nice elf we have :-)

Students were able to play outside all day today!  What a difference it made with "the wiggles!"  Thanks for continuing to send warm coats!

Jingles the Elf and Cold Weather Recess Policy

Parents,

I sent an email out today too, but I want to make sure everyone is familiar with our cold weather recess policy.  If it is below 20 degrees, including windchill, students will NOT go outside for recess!

I forgot to take a picture of Jingles yesterday, but below is what he was up to over the weekend!

This picture is difficult to see, but he decorated our Promthean Board and made snowflakes.  He left us a note that said, "Your decorations were such a disgrace, I made snowflakes and spruced up the place!"

Today, Jingles must have been tired from all the work over the weekend... he is resting!

The sign says, "Don't mind me - I'm just taking a snooze.  When I wake I hope to tell Santa good news!"

Have a wonderful evening!

Jingles the Elf

You may have already heard about our classroom visitor - Jingles the Elf!  He is here for the month of December to make sure our class is behaving well at school!  Today he was a bit michievious...

The next few weeks are full of lots of fun and excitment!  We are currently traveling around the world to see how different countries celebrate the winter holidays!

Containers for Bread Day!

Parents,

Please remember to send a Cool Whip sized container to school for Bread Day this Friday.  I only have 2 right now! EVERY child needs to have a container to make their bread in.  If we do not have enough containers, we will not be able to participate in Bread Day with the rest of the second grade classes.

Thank you!

Turkeys in Disguise Project

Dear Families,

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and you know what that meansturkeys everywhere are going into hiding. Yes, thats right! Turkeys will do just about anything to avoid being your Thanksgiving meal. Help Tom Turkey survive this Thanksgiving by creating a disguise.

Attached you will find a blank turkey template. Please help this turkey make it safely past Thanksgiving by disguising him through the holiday he fears the most! Turkeys that have made it through in the past have been dressed like ballerinas, football players, farmers, hula dancers, Elvis, snowmen, Spiderman, a princess, Santa, and even one of our second grade teachers, Mrs. Hoschouer!

Your main focus is to dress your turkey in attire that will help him blend in with your family so he will go unnoticed at the Thanksgiving table!

Please have fun and be creative! You may use anything you can think of to decorate. Turkeys in the past have been decorated with crayons, macaroni, craft feathers, tissue paper, wallpaper scraps, dried beans, rice, clothes and shoes cut from newspaper ads, ribbons, fabric scraps, etc.

Please follow these directions when disguising your turkey:

1. Cut out the turkey

2. Decide how to disguise him

3. Have fun decorating

Below are examples from turkeys students did last year.  I will post more tomorrow!  You can also check out Mrs. Hoschouer's Website for more examples and ideas - or do a Google search for "Turkeys in Disguise."  Turkeys are due no later than Thursday, November 14, 2013.

Thanks and have fun!

Promethean Board

Parents,

Our Promethean Board is finally working!  You may have heard a bit about it already.

We are all learning how it works and how to use it together.  We have run into a few kinks along the way, but have been able to work through them!  Today ActivInspire closed right after the comprehension test and we lost the results... so they got a second chance at the test!

Here are a few pictures so you can see what it looks like!

This is the Promethean Board:

These are students using the clickers:

Today we used them to take our comprehension test.  We also use them to take surveys that indicate how students feel they are doing on a task.  We then use the survey to adjust our learning targets.

Have a great weekend!

Newsletter and Book Orders

Parents,

"The best laid plans of mice and men..."  I did not complete our email distribution list on time, so our weekly newsletter was sent home in daily folders.  I hope to have the email listed completed by next week!

I also sent home a Scholastic book order today.  Scholastic is offering a Septemeber special - if 5 students order a copy of "Bucket Filling for Kids" then we will get a free copy for our classroom!  We are implementing Bucket Filling in our classroom this year, and this book would be a great way to extend the idea at home!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Habitat Diorama Project

Habitats and Animal Diorama

As many of you already know, we have started working on habitats in our classroom!  This is a fun subject and we will be spending quite a bit of time researching the different habitats and the animals that live in them.  Each student has been assigned a habitat.  They are to choose an animal that lives in their assigned habitat for the diorama project, which will be completed at home.  I have already sent an email about the project and the actual assignment will be sent home this Friday (5/17.) If your child is unsure of their habitat, see chart below.

Measurement "Paw-ty" Next Week

The following note is being sent home today (Friday) in backpacks.  Just in case it doesn't make it to you, I thought I would post it too!  If you don't have stuffed animals at home, or forget on Monday, I will have some available for use!

Also, if you didn't buy pancake breakfast tickets in advance- it's not too late!  They are available at the door.  Hope to see you all at Applebee's tomorrow morning (I will be there to serve you pancakes at 8:45!)

Dear Fellow Stuffed Animal Lovers,

WOOF! Meow! Your presence is requested at our measurement paw-ty!! You are invited to bring your favorite stuffed animal to school next week. Please be a responsible pet owner and remind your stuffed animal to be on their best behavior while at school. You will need your stuffed pet animal to rotate to several different math stations, in which you will learn about the different areas of measurement (height, weight, length, volume, distance).

Date of Measurement Paw-ty: 4/29-5/3

P.S. Sorry, but only stuffed pets allowed. Please keep your other pets at home.

Sincerely,

Book Talk Examples, MLK Art Project Picture

Book Talk Examples

Below are some examples of students giving book talks.  These are a bit dated, they are from Reading Rainbow, but the summaries they are giving about the books are excellent!  When your child writes his/her summary of the book they read, please keep these examples in mind.  The idea is to tell a little bit about the book and encourage other students to read the book as well!

In class we have been talking about: 1) A "hook" to start with - something to catch the audience's attention 2)  Giving an interesting summary of what the book is MOSTLY about, and 3) Either telling why they liked the book or why someone else should read the book.

I hope this information helps!  Please call or email me if you would like more information.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Mural

We teamed up with Mrs. Houschouer's class for a really neat art project for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Each child in both classes used oil pastels to color one 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper.  Then we made a huge mural of Martin Luther King, Jr. and hung it up in the hall.  Since we are unable to send the final product home I am posting a picture for you to see.  It came out really cool!  The kids were very proud of their work and enjoyed the collaboration between the two classes!

Enjoy the weekend - it looks like we may actually see some sun!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

It felt a bit rough getting back into the swing of things after break this year!  I'm happy to find out that we will have the full two weeks next year!

There will be no spelling words this week, due to the short week.

There is a short homework assignment (2 pages) this week that will be due on Friday.

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and a fantastic start to the new year!
